Abstract:
The aerial image files in this archive are copies of standard digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQ) from the National Digital Cartographic Data Base that have been repositioned to the Michigan GeoRef coordinate system. Orthophotographs represent aerial images where the perspective view of the camera is corrected to fit the geometry of a flat map. During the rectification process, the images are referenced to a particular cartographic projection system. This enables the user to display the images next to each other in their correct geographic location, map features directly from the image, or display other map information directly over the image. DOQs represent an orthorectified image product that meets a particular set of specifications developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). DOQ files are organized by the time period associated with film acquisition. Currently, DOQs in Michigan have been produced from two statewide flights that were initiated in 1992 and 1998 under the National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP) administered by USGS. Generally, production work terminates on an image series when a new flight is completed. Acquisition cycles are five to seven years apart. Purpose:
DOQs are considered one of the fundamental data sets in a geographic information system. As such, they serve as a planimetric image base that facilitates data compilation and revision activities and provides geographic orientation when viewing other layers of information. They can also be used as a standard aerial photograph for a wide variety of applications.
Supplemental_Information:
File names are derived from the partitioning of the USGS 7.5' topographic quadrangle maps into four quadrants, corresponding to the area covered on each image. The name consists of the full quadrangle name, written as a single word, followed by the quadrant abbreviation NE, NW, SE, SW. There are two files associated with each DOQ entry: the primary image file with a .sid extension, and a separate coordinate file with a .sdw extension. Images for the NAPP 92-Michigan series were acquired in the spring (March, April, May) of 1992-1995 using panchromatic (black-and-white) film. Geographic coverage of each image is 3.75' of latitude and longitude (one-quarter of a standard 7.5' quadrangle map, or approximately 3 x 4 miles).

DOQ images were acquired in GeoTIFF or native BSQ format and reprojected from Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)/NAD-83/meters to Michigan GeoRef/NAD-83/meters using ERDAS Imagine software. Resampling was done using Bilinear Interpolation method. Images were compressed to MrSID format.
