Description:

Abstract:

The MDNR 1978 land cover files represent a compilation of data from county and regional planning commissions or their subcontractors. The original 1978 Landuse CAD files have been converted into a GIS environment. Files are formatted for the entire state by county in the Michigan Georef Coordinate System.

Purpose:

This data set is intended for general planning purposes. It is not intended for site specific use. Supplemental Information: Data editing, manipulation, and evaluation has been completed by the Michigan State University Center for Remote Sensing and GIS and by MDNR. Files have been checked, by MDNR, against the original MDNR digital files for errant land cover/land use classification codes. Edits were not made to the original CAD files derived from data received from the counties and regional planning commissions.

Process Description: MSU Center for Remote Sensing and GIS converted survey township files from the original Intergraph DGN format of the MDNR Landuse map to clean and build into a GIS polygon structure using MSU C-Map software, v. 2.0. Convert MDNR Land Cover/Land Use Township files from C-Map format to ESRI ArcView shapefiles.
To correct inconsistencies on field names and structures, the MSU Compress program (Compress.exe) was used to standardize the database structure. Then, the C-Map to GIS program (CMAP2GIS.exe) was run as a batch program using the to_gis.exe program.
Each C-Map township file on a county directory was converted to an ArcView shapefile. Each shapefile was then converted to an ARC/INFO file.
Join survey townships together to create a county-wide coverage. twnjoin.aml (if data is ArcView Shapefile format) or twnjoin2.aml (if data is ARC/INFO coverage) These programs are used to join townships and township level land cover files. The program converts shapefiles to coverages. From the subsequent list of coverages in the folder, the coverages are joined using the mapjoin command.
Eliminate joined coverages and dissolve lines. Final product is a joined coverage without slivers and unnecessary lines.
