Description:
Abstract:
Wellhead protection areas represent the land surface area that contributes ground water to wells serving public water supply systems throughout Michigan. The areas define a landscape in which management strategies are employed to protect public water supply wells from ground water contamination.
Purpose:
The data was published to provide regulators and the public an idea of the areas of the state that are critically important to the protection of public water supply wells. In accordance with the concept of sources water protection, wellhead protection areas have always been considered sensitive areas requiring an increased awareness and emphasis on the prevention of ground water contamination.
Supplemental_Information:
The data and depicted wellhead protection areas are reliable within the context of the uncertainty associated with characterization of ground water flow systems. Every attempt has been made to account for uncertainties in the data used to identify the wellhead protection areas and create the associated polygons.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data and depicted wellhead protection areas are reliable within the context of the uncertainty associated with characterization of ground water flow systems. Every attempt has been made to account for uncertainties in the data used to identify the wellhead protection areas and create the associated polygons.
Completeness_Report:
This statewide dataset is not complete and work continues to identify provisional wellhead protection areas throughout the eastern half of the lower peninsula and all of the upper peninsula. Statewide data collection is projected to be complete by January of 2014 with periodic updates of individual wellhead protection areas as they occur.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The polygons labeled as a wellhead protection area delineation are located with an accuracy resulting from the rectifying of the polygon location against a USGS topography map as the base map. The polygons representing provisional wellhead protection areas and low vulnerability wellhead areas have been located based upon the positional accuracy of well point locations. Well point locations are largely based upon GPS data with an estimated positional accuracy of + or minus 3 meters. Some well point locations were established via review and placement of wells on aerial photos. The positional accuracy of this latter data set is + or minus 10 meters.
