Completeness_Report:
This data set does not represent all government lots noted in the General Land Office transcriptions (and associated maps). Most government lots included are found along the north and west sides of sections. Lakes that did not contain survey sections in the General Land Office maps are represented as polygons with null values.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Section lines have an accuracy of +/- 23 meters, based on horizontal accuracy of MIRIS base from which the section lines were taken.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The statewide section ESRI coverage was built on the statewide quarter/quarter coverage. A "regiondissolve" was run based on the values in the field "twnrngsec". The French Survey Claims and Indian Grants were exempt from the dissolve process and are maintained in the section coverage. The interior of the larger inland lakes, where no quarter/quarter section lines existed are maintained as empty polygons. Section Coverage was converted to shapefile format.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
In almost all cases the manual cleanup of sliver polygons made no appreciable difference in the position of the county line or section lines (less than one meter). There are three areas to note, however, where some editing had to be done to the original position of the polygon boundaries. The most significant was along the "Third Correction Line" (between Towns 20 and 21 North). Starting about mid-state, there was an ever-widening gap working westward to Lake Michigan between the counties north and south of the Correction Line (Clare, Osceola, Lake, Mason, Missaukee, Wexford, and Manistee). The gap was quite narrow in the interior, but widened to as much as 20 meters by the western Mason/Manistee boundary. The southern boundary was 'pulled up' to the northern boundary in this case. A second area of revision were those areas where the county line follows a natural feature and splits the surveyed sections (Charlevoix/Emmet, Antrim/Grand Traverse/Kalkaska, Cass/St. Joseph, and Monroe/Wayne). The quarter/quarter section lines were fairly close in the northern cases, but larger adjustments had to be made in particular between Monroe and Wayne Counties. Where these edits were done, reference was made to the DOQs to maintain the integrity of the section lines as closely as possible. Finally, Section 36 of Town 42 North, Range 34 West in Iron County was missing from the source shapefile and had to be added manually; again, based on the DOQ for the area.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
An edit was made in Town 39 North, Range 20 West in Delta County. The Section, QS and QQS assigned to the area of Round Island in Big Bay De Noc was changed from the West 1/2 of Section 27 to the E 1/4 of Section 28 and the W1/4 of Section 27. This adjustment was based on the 7.5 minute Topographic quadrangle of the area. QQS Coverage was converted to shapefile format.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The county coverages were appended together and then a clean was done on the resulting overlaps (which always generates 'sliver polygons') and gaps (which may, but not always generate 'sliver polygons'). Through experimentation, it was found that a fuzzy tolerance of 10 meters would remove about 90% of the 'sliver polygons' while maintaining the integrity of the legitimate quarter/quarter section polygons.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) quarter/quarter section CAD files were compared to hard copy General Land Office maps and to section lines from the Michigan Resource Information System (MIRIS) Base. Microstation was then used to make corrections to the quarter/quarter section files to reflect the more accurate MIRIS base section lines. In cases where more than 16 quarter/quarter sections were found within a section, or where data distortion warranted investigation, the quarter/quarter section files were corrected to include government lots as portrayed in the General Land Office maps. Government lots around lakes and rivers were NOT included. Most of the government lots included are along the north or west side of sections. Interior grid lines are the result of a model based on survey methods used to establish quarter/quarter sections. That is, starting from the south section line and measuring 1,320 feet north for each east-west quarter/quarter line. Starting from the east section line and measuring 1,320 feet west for each north-south quarter/quarter line. Corrections to non-standard sections were made to the northern most row and/or western most column of quarter/quarter sections. Corrected quarter/quarter section CAD files were converted to Arc/Info using Arc/Info igdsarc command. Converted coverages were cleaned with a dangle tolerance of 0 and a fuzzy tolerance of .5. All dangles were corrected and the coverage was recleaned if necessary. Coverages were then projected from Michigan State Plane coordinate system to Michigan GeoRef coordinate system (oblique mercator projection) using ArcInfo project command. Arc topology was created to allow for selection of arcs based on CAD level (values derived from igds conversion). A database of town, range, section, quarter, quarter/quarter and corner coordinates was derived from DNR survey section data using FoxPro. Values from database where then used to generate label points into Arc/Info polygon coverages. ArcView was used to compare quarter/quarter section coverage labels to survey section values and to correct polygon label errors. General Land Office maps were referenced to determine label values for government lots and private claims. After polygon label errors were corrected, the polygon attribute table was joined to the database of town, range, section, quarter, quarter/quarter values. Pseudo nodes were removed from the polygons using Arc/Info unsplit command. X-coordinate and y-coordinate values for the polygon label point were added to the polygon attribute table using Arc/Info addxy command. Node topology was then built, and node x-coordinate and y-coordinate values where added to the node attribute table using Arc/Info command addxy node. Shapefiles for each county were created by using the ArcView "Convert to Shapefile" command.
