Description:

Abstract:

This dataset identifies the physical channel units, termed "valley segments", that are based upon the concept of a natural ecological unit, as defined by the spatial scales of riverine physical and biological processes. Valley segments are fairly large units that are characterized by relatively homogenous hydrologic, limnologic, channel morphology, and riparian dynamics; valley segment characteristics change sharply at stream junctions, slope breaks, and boundaries of local landforms. Catchment size, hydrology, water chemistry, water temperature, valley character, channel character, and fish assemblages were the attributes used to interpret and describe the ecological character of river valley segments. A GIS was utilized to interpret the information from the catchment and valley characteristics and categorizations were developed for each component attribute and assigned category values for each segment. Results were stored in ArcView 3.0 format. This dataset on valley segment classifications provides an initial description of the river resources in the Lower and Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This dataset and its development are an iterative process in which validation of attribute codings and the addition of new attributes will continue.

Purpose:

This dataset was developed for the biologists and resource managers of Michigan rivers and will be able to develop many of their activities wihtin this framework of ecological units.

This information was taken from the US EPA RF3 files. The information reflected in these files is as accurrate as the underlying RF3 file.

Completeness_Report:

While creating this dataset, rivers and streams less than "2 fingers' width" on the Gazeteer were not included. This dataset is accurate and complete to the best of our knowledge at the 1:100,000 scale. The delineation of these VSEC units is an iterative process, though, and the updates will be made as and if needed. It represents a subset of the lakes that comprise the RF3 files for Michigan.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:

Three major steps were used to derrive these large-scale ecological features:

(1.) Initial identification of valley segments and segment boundaries using key map features (elevation, wetland, surficial geology, stream networks, lakes, land cover maps were integrated) to check for potential abrupt changes in the physical boundaries against info on fish distributions and field experience

(2.) Finalizing these segment breaks

(3.) Reviewing segment breaks and assigning unique identifiers (ID) (per Seelbach et al 1997).

Dynamic segmentation was used to break the RF3 linework (which has been improved over the previous version of RF3), and the Reach Indexing Tool (developed by the Research Triangle Institute) was used to assign the linework the VSEC ID.
