Description:
Abstract:
The Congressional District boundaries were drawn based on Federal standards for the purpose of protecting voting rights and striving for an environment of one person, one vote. The original Michigan Congressional District boundaries were derived from year 2000 US Census Bureau TIGER/Line files. The boundary lines follow Census block boundaries. There are 15 Congressional Districts that divide the state population equally. Each 2002 District contains a population of 662,563 for 14 of the districts and 662,562 for one district.

The Framework version of these boundaries are essentially the same as the TIGER based version described above. However, the MGF version reflects the increased positional accuracy of the Michigan Geographic Framework geography. For both data analysis and cartographic purposes, the framework version would often be preferable when working with MGF geography.

Purpose:
This Michigan Geographic Framework based ESRI ArcView shapefile was created to provide a geographic layer that is useful for cartographic purposes, demographic analyses, election management, political campaign administration and political research.

Supplemental_Information:
This data set is maintained in the Michigan Georef projection system which is a form of an Oblique Mercator projection. This file is provided as an ESRI ArcView Shapefile. An ESRI Shapefile consists of a main file, an index file, a project file and a dBASE table. The four files that make up the Michigan 2002 Framework Congressional District Boundary data set are listed below.

Main File: CongDist_MGF.shp Index File: CongDist_MGF.shx Project File: CongDist_MGF.prj dBASE Table: CongDist_MGF.dbf

Note: A version of this Congressional District Boundary data set based on the original TIGER/line file is also available.

Ending_Date: 20020719
Currentness_Reference:
The geographic structure of this data set was created based on the Block boundary lines contained in the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau based TIGER line file. Small differences in the boundary lines are due to the incorporation of the positionally more accurate MGF version 2a linework. The boundaries are still consistent with the parameters outlined in the original TIGER based version created in 2001.
