Abstract:
The Michigan’s Major Watersheds - Subbasins shape file depicts the drainage areas of 20 square miles or greater at geographic features such as the mouth of a river or the location of a USGS stream flow collection station. The shape file is used to determine hydrologic parameters for determining a range of flows in watershed analysis.
Purpose:
Intended for use in determining the 10% design flood frequency discharges or greater. Also used for watershed management and planning. Watersheds depict drainage areas of 20 mi2 or greater.
Supplemental_Information:
This watershed file was derived from files produced by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) at <http://www.deq.state.mi.us/lwm/water_mgmt/gis/default.asp>. In order to facilitate viewing individual counties, the Michigan State University Center for Remote Sensing and GIS (MSU CRSGIS) modified these files. Both DEQ files (Upper and Lower Peninsula) were projected into Michigan GeoRef. The county files were produced by selecting all watersheds that covered any part of the county. Therefore, the county watershed files have a larger extent that the county, and watersheds may be represented in more than one county file. Data was compiled from available USGS 7.5 minute Topographic Quadrangles over a period of ten years (1988 thru 1997).

Line work was hand delineated onto USGS 1:24,000 scale Topographic Quadrangles, USGS, NRCS and MDEQ checked line work as part of a three-agency initiative. Data was checked and digitized using Microstation to fit the MIRIS base. Line work for the Upper Peninsula was cleaned and assemble Using Arc/Info NT. Line work for the Lower Peninsula was projected to Michigan GeoRef, cleaned and assembled in Arc/Info NT.
