Groundwater Inventory and Mapping Project, a cooperative effort between the Water Bureau - Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, USGS - Michigan Water Science Center and Michigan State University - Institute of Water Research, RS&GIS and Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. This project was mandated by P.A. 148 (Michigan Acts of 2003). Major funding was provided by MDEQ, supplemented with additional funds from the USGS Cooperative Water Program.

The data in this file was obtained from Wellogic, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Statewide Groundwater Database (SGWD). Wellogic contains approximately 425,000 water well records found within the State of Michigan, and although it represents the best available data, it cannot be considered a complete database of all the wells or well records in existence. The well files were downloaded by county and merged together to create a statewide file. In the merge process any well that fell outside of its designated county boundary was removed from the original data set. This file contains approximately 269,000 records with a limited number of attribute fields that describe several key hydrologic properties including saturated thickness (Athk2), horizontal conductivity (Hcond2), vertical conductivity (Vcond2), transmissivity (T2) and the yield (gallons per minute) necessary to lower the water in the well to ½ its non-pumping level (D50plek).

The Wellogic data base is the richest source of well data available in the State of Michigan. From this well data much information can be derived about the groundwater characteristics. This shape files was downloaded from the Wellogic database on 5/24/2005 and serves as the master well file for the Groundwater Inventory and Mapping project.

Well data by county was downloaded from the Michigan Geographic Data Library on May 24, 2005 using a download tool created by Bill Enslin at Michigan State University. All county files were renamed and processed to remove wells that fell outside of the county boundaries. This application uses MapObjects Lite code to process the spatial analyzes and the field calculations. Framework V4b county boundaries were used to clip out bad point locations and the MDNR public land survey section shape file was used to flag points that were outside of there survey sections. Other attributes were added such as elevation information, rock and drift well types, and drift aquifer percentages. Next all counties and associated lithology information were merged into a single statewide shape file.
