Groundwater Inventory and Mapping Project, a cooperative effort between the Water Bureau - Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, USGS - Michigan Water Science Center and Michigan State University - Institute of Water Research, RS&GIS and Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. This project was mandated by P.A. 148 (Michigan Acts of 2003). Major funding was provided by MDEQ, supplemented with additional funds from the USGS Cooperative Water Program.

This shape file was derived from the 1981 publication of the Hydrological Atlas of Michigan plate 26. Three plates of the Aquifer Characteristics of Glacial Drift map were scanned, geo-rectified and used as a backdrop in the digitizing of this polgon vector file.
- Purpose:

The purpose of this shape file was to convert Plate 26 from the 1981 publication of the Hydrological Atlas of Michigan into a GIS layer that could be used in the Groundwater Mapping and Inventory Project. The original atlas was produced at Western Michigan University Department of Geology in 1981.

The sheets were georeferenced in ArcGIS using the Michigan GeoRef UTM Nad83 meters projection. The images were snapped to a Michigan Framework State County file. Once the images were georeferenced within national mapping standards the images were mosaicked together and combined into one statewide image.
