Description:

Abstract:

The 'Potential Wetland Restoration Areas' shapefile highlights areas in the State of Michigan that area likely to have conditions suitable for wetland restoration efforts. These areas were indentified on one of two spatial datasets used by the MDEQ-LWMD Wetlands, Lakes and Streams Unit to pinpoint areas that were historically wetland. Hydric soils, as identified by NRCS with assistance from DEQ-LWMD, exported from their SSURGO Soils database. LandUse circa 1800 as prepared by Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI), attributed landuse codes predicting the presence of wetland were exported to a new dataset, called, 'Presettlement Wetlands'. These layers were unioned into one theme, and then areas indicating current wetlands, urban areas, hydrology were erased from the spatial extent of the theme.

Purpose:

To determine areas that are best suited for wetland restoration. The areas of 'Potential Wetland Restoration' are ranked : high potential, moderate potential or low potential.

Supplemental_Information:

High potential areas indicate presettlement (LandUse circa 1800) and hydric soils present. Moderate potential areas indicate only hydric soils present. Low potential areas indicate only presettlement (LandUse circa 1800) present.
