Title: Digital Water Atlas of Michigan

Description:

Abstract:

This dataset was released by James Breck, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, at the Institute for Fisheries Research. The statewide Michigan Hydrography Framework (version?) (based upon TIGER/Line Files, including basemap features based on both MDNR MIRIS files and enhanced linear referencing system built from the Michigan Accident Location Index (MALI)) was utilized as the basis of this dataset. Lake polygons present in this layer were edited (shape, attributes, location, duplicate representations for a lake in multiple counties), created for lakes that were detemined to be missing, and adjusted to reflect our current knowledge of the waterbodies throughout the state. For each lake (~10 acres or larger), a "New-Key" was assigned, based upon Humphrys and Green (1962). This unique identifier serves to link these saptial representations to numerous datasets (historical, current, and future) containing information pertaining to water quality, depth, origin, etc..

Purpose:

This dataset was developed from the Michigan Hydro framework to represent our most current information on lake area and location. It is intended for inclusion in the Digital Water Atlas of Michigan (based upon the 1:100K NHD). It is for use by state agency employees and individuals for pursuits related to the improvment of inland lake information or those assessing the state of water quality and aquatic resources in Michigan.

This dataset is a work in progress, and relevant for the date it is published. If this dataset is used, please cite Jim Breck and the Digital Water Atlas of Michigan.

Use_Constraints:

Though this dataset represents our most current and up to date information on the lakes of Michigan (~10 acres and larger), it is under continual improvement and modifications are made frequently. The latest set of improvements are made and are reflected in the name of the file (lakes_polygons_200403.shp was created in March of 2004).

Data_Set_Credit:

The original basemap used to produce this map was made available to the Institute for Fisheries Research by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Center for Geographic Information. "It was derrived from the US Census Bureau based TIGER line files and the Michigan DNR's MIRIS files (contaiing features that were digitized from USGS topographic quads), MI Dpet. of Transportation ACT51 maps through 1999, Qualified Voter File project (QVF) maps begun in 1997, 1992 and 1997 Michigan State University aerial photos, 1992-2000 USGS Digitial Ortho Quad photos." Quoted information was taken from a set of example metadata (http:mic-cluster.state.mi.us/webapp/cgi/framework/metadata/Washtenaw.html ) Numerous additions of lakes, modification of lake shape and attribution were made reflecting local knowledge, as well as historical records.

Attribute_Accuracy:

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:

The attributes assigned to the polygons representing lakes are accurate to the best of our knowledge. Acreage (Acres_GIS to the nearest 0.001 acres) was determined by software (ArcGIS) calculations. Lake names were derrived from the framework, and altered if deemed necessary.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

These lake features present in the Michigan Hydrologic Framework (version ?) were included as the basemap. Since acquiring this spatial dataset in 199????, many edits were made to both the spatial representation and attributes. Largely, this information, shares the consistency of the Michigan Hydrologic Framework. While improving the framework's spatial representation and attributes, a "New_Key" was added to each lake polygon so that it could be linked to other sources of data, namely the database of MI lakes compiled here at the Institute for Fisheries Research.

Completeness_Report:

It is complete and represents the truth, to the best of our knowledge.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

The original Michigan Hydrologic Framework basemaps (source of the polygon file for lakes) were digitized from TIGER/Line Files and 7.5 Minute USGS topogrpahic quadrangles in Microstation using an error of 0.02% or less.

Process_Description:

Upon importing the waterbody features from the Michigan Geographic Framework basemap into a shapefile, numerous edits have been made which resulted in the current layer. Edits were made to update lakes that no longer exist, lakes that recently were created, and to reflect other alterations to the hydrology, as determined by visual inspection of the state of Michigan's aerial photos, digital raster graphics, or other exisiting Michigan frameowrk.
