Description:

Abstract:

Digital form of maps used in "Designated and Critical Sand Dune Areas" pamphlet. Published by Geological Survey Division in 1996. These are the same areas represented in the "Atlas of Critical Dunes", which was publised in February 1989 and is referenced in Part 353, Sand Dune Protection and Management, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended (NREPA).

Purpose:

To display the boundaries and extent of Critical Dune Areas regulated under Part 353 of NREPA.

Supplemental_Information:

The department has the ability to regulate lands up to 250 feet from the landward boundary of the Critical Dune Area under Section 324.35312(4) of PA 451. The "Dune_Type" attribute contains three different types of dune features: 1) Areas that exhibit dune-like characteristics, 2) Barrier Dunes, and 3) Exemplary dune associated plant comminity. All three types of dune communities are subject to the provisions of Part 353, Sand Dune Protection and Management, of the NREPA.

Process_Description:

The original drawings were hand drawn on MIRIS base maps. Then digitized into Microstation format form which the pamhlet was made. The Microstation files were converted to ArcView shapefiles by Geological Survey Division personnel. Land and Water Management Division - MDEQ, aquired the dataset from the Department of Natural Resources - Land and Mineral Services Division with permission of Robert Reszka. Existing metadata was updated to reflect the relationship between this digital layer and regulations under Part 353, Sand Dunes Protection and Management of NREPA.
