Narrative Description located at the corner of Main and Division Streets, the principal intersection of downtown Ishpeming, the Ishpeming City Hall is a two-story, rectangular structure of random-coursed, rock-faced Portage Entry sandstone and brick. Resting on a foundation of concrete and rubble brownstone, the building features a square brick and sandstone corner tower which is topped by an ogee-shaped pyramidal roof of dark shingles and a one-story jail wing of brick and sandstone with a hipped roof. A rounded entry arch, fashioned of Berea sandstone, highlights the main facade which is faced with Chicago-pressed brick and decorative sandstone trim at the lintels and sills. A sandstone beltcourse encircles the building, dividing the two floors. An intersecting gabled roof covers the main section of the structure, arranged in a cross axis, while the one-story jail addition of brick and sandstone is covered with a hipped roof. Completed in 1889 to 1891, the building is a vernacular interpretation of the Romanesque Revival style.
Statement of Significance Since 1891 the City Hall has been the home of municipal affairs in Ishpeming. Constructed at the height of the iron-ore boom in Marquette County, the City Hall has architectural importance for its use of locally quarried Portage Entry sandstone. It also expresses the work of Demetrius F. Charlton of Marquette and Milwaukee whose architectural firm planned several civic, educational, and industrial buildings in the western Upper Peninsula between 1890 and 1915. The hall originally housed the library, jail, and marshall's office in addition to city offices. The building continues to serve the City of Ishpeming.
