Narrative Description The seventy-nine buildings that comprise the Dennis and State Street Historic District are excellent examples of Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Shingle-style structures. The district is located within a two-block area bounded by Union Street to the north, railroad tracks to the south, State Street to the east, and Dennis Street to the west. Adjacent to the main business area, the district lies in the center of Adrian's southern residential area.
Statement of Significance The Dennis and State Street Historic District is significant because it offers a well preserved representation of typical American domestic architecture that closely corresponds to the economic history of the region. Notable is the development from modest frame L-plan Greek Revival cottages built by Adrian's pioneer settlers circa 1826 to free-flowing, elaborate, brick Queen Anne mansions of the prosperous mid-1860s. Presently, many of the homes continue to function as single family residences with high levels of historical integrity.
