Narrative Description The William H. Brown House is a square, two-story, Italianate frame structure with clapboard siding and is located on a large lot containing a variety of mature trees. Its low pitched, hipped roof is accentuated by a typical Italianate belvedere with segmental-arch-head windows. The Brown House's Italianate style is also evident in the overhanging eaves with paired sets of decorative brackets. The house has simple pilasters on each corner. Despite the addition of a porch on the southwest side, the Brown House retains its original nineteenth-century character.
Statement of Significance The William H. Brown House, built in 1854, is significant for its original owner, William Brown, an early member of Allegan's first Methodist Episcopal Church. William H. Brown settled in Allegan in 1836 where he became a farmer and well known preacher in the area for over forty years. Architecturally the Brown House is notable as a fine Allegan example of the Italianate style. The house is presently privately owned.
