Houses in the district, many constructed of locally quarried limestone, range in style from Gothic Revival to Jacobethan Revival.

| Statement of Significance |
The East River Road Historic District contains some of the Detroit area's best examples of the work of architect Gordon W. Lloyd. Based in Detroit and Windsor, Lloyd designed St. James Episcopal Church and other houses on the island. Lloyd's use of Gothic Revival architecture gave the district a pastoral ambience that attracted some of Detroit's most prominent families. Built between 1840 and 1870, the structures of the East River Road Historic District are in excellent condition.
