Narrative Description The President's House on the campus of the University of Michigan is a three-story, square, Italianate structure with a two-story subsidiary wing and extension. Stucco-faced brick walls support a bracketed, truncated hip-roof surmounted by a balustrade. The entrance facade is fronted by a Doric columned portico.
Statement of Significance The President's House is the only remaining of the original University of Michigan campus buildings. Designed by Alexander J. Davis and built by Harpin Lum from 1839 to 1840, four original faculty buildings were constructed and the presidents house served rotating faculty until the position of president was created in 1852. The house was changed dramatically during the 1860s with the addition of a wing and the third story. Few other changes have been made and the building continues to house the university's presidents as it has for over a century.
