The Henry Simmons Frieze House is a square, two-story, Italianate structure with walls of smooth cut, regularly coursed fieldstone walls. The house is topped by a truncated, bracketed hip-roof with various gables surmounted by a belvedere. Several porches and balconies ornament the building and feature turned wood spindle balustrades.

| Statement of Significance |
The Frieze House is one of the only houses made of local fieldstone in the Ann Arbor area, standing on a lot of unusually large size for the area. The home was built in approximately 1859 to 1862 by Professor of Latin Henry Simmons Frieze. Frieze was a major figure at the University of Michigan for over forty years and was acting president for three terms, from 1868 to 1870, 1885 to 1886, and from 1889 to 1890. It was during his administration that women were first admitted to the university. Frieze sold his home in the 1870s and the cupola was added at that time. Currently the home is a private residence and is well maintained.
