Narrative Description The original one-and-one-half-story, timber framed and wood sheathed portion of the house is Greek Revival and faces south. Likely built in 1854, it is now almost completely surrounded by additions. The most prominent addition is a two-story Italianate style front section. The other additions of similar vintage are single-story in height.
Statement of Significance The Bell-Spalding House is a well preserved farm house that reflects the change in local architectural tastes in the decade between 1854 and 1864. This house typifies the better class of frame farmhouse of the 1850-1865 period in Ann Arbor and the rest of Washtenaw county. The transition between Greek Revival and Italianate as well as the fine state of preservation make it unique in Ann Arbor.
