Narrative Description The Squire W. and Dolly Rowe House is a two-story, front-gabled, Greek Revival house flanked by single-story side-gable wings. Built of coursed, uncut fieldstone, the house typifies the style with its cornice returns, scroll brackets, and projected quoins. A porte cochere has been added to one wing of the house.
Statement of Significance The Rowe House is a well-preserved and unique example of Greek Revival architecture in Michigan. The home is associated with former Civil War veteran Squire Rowe, who was also elected to the state legislature in 1865. The Rowe House has been restored and is currently a private residence.
Marker Name Rowe House
Marker Text ROWE HOUSE Squire and Dolly Rowe, who settled here in 1835, built this elegant, cut fieldstone house in 1855. The solid cobblestone, beaded mortar joint construction is highlighted by the pleasing and sophisticated use of delicate scrollwork under the eaves and by the smooth chiseled quoins, lintels and sills. Squire Rowe grew to a position of prominence in the community. After twenty-five terms as township supervisor, he served in the state legislature in 1865, the year before his death.
